SheSays Event “The Digital Diet”

The Digital Diet: You Are What You Tweet (2009)

I met Alessandra Lariu, co-founder of SheSays, in New York at the CAT Conference. We talked about how social networking blurred the lines between our personal and professional lives. Later, she introduced me to Kim Hoang, Director of the LA chapter, and the conversation continued. This led to a collab on an event for women in digital called The Digital Diet: You Are What You Tweet.

The concept of a “digital diet” was a play on words. First, I presented digital platforms I used to literally lose weight and stay healthy. Second, I presented insight on how we consume and digest digital information. I came up with the phrase “you are what you tweet” because I realized early on that broadcasting to a wider audience required greater control over the narrative. By understanding how to leverage new media tools personally and professionally, I became healthier physically and mentally.

I opened the meeting with a presentation about a few of the social media tools, such as Nike+ and Livestrong.com, which I was using at the time to meet my health and fitness goals. The presentation was followed by a roundtable with digital marketing mavens discussing how to manage our online personas.

Wiredrive continued to support SheSays, becoming an official Sponsor in 2010, paving the way for women in digital to rise and thrive! I met so many amazing women whom I went on to collaborate with on future events, like the Blog Out Loud panel with Rebecca Orlov, and the Boulder Digital Works sponsorship with Kat Egan. Additionally, when I moved to Colorado in 2010 I helped launch the Boulder chapter of SheSays! I am so proud of that organization for evolving over the years into the incredible resource it is now. I’m honored to have been a part of launching the LA and Boulder chapters.
